Learn about the past, present and future of women’s football.

Football is America’s favorite sport – sorry baseball – and that includes American women’s favorite sport. For years we’ve known more women watch the Super Bowl than the Oscars  and they make half of all official NFL merchandise purchases. They also have heavy influence over their children’s participation in sports, which has created change in the professional development of football coaches.

 

But that’s all off the field. What is less known is how women are making moves between the hashes and on the sidelines. Let’s take a better look at the past, present, and future of women in football.

Leah shares with us her love for football

Leah Hinkle is a former Linebacker who played for Team USA in 2010 and 2013 and took home TWO GOLD MEDALS!

Leah has also been a football coach for several years starting with the NFL experience in 2011. She works for the Clackamas Education Service District and USA Football as a Master Trainer. In 2017, after a successful fourteen year playing career, she hung up the cleats.

She now shares her experience and enthusiasm for the game with youth, high school, and women tackle football players in Portland, Oregon as the General Manager and tackling coach of the Oregon Ravens.

She is the first Girl Boss Sports Football Coach!

1990, Bamberg Lady Bears, Germany

Women's Football in Germany started as early as in 1987. With a league founded in 1990. Today a total of 28 women teams play within the two big leagues. Germany also has a national team since 2010.

2010 IFAF Women’s World Championship

USA Football and the Independent Women's Football League sent the first-ever U.S. Women's National Team to Stockholm, Sweden, to play in the inaugural IFAF Women's World Championship.

2010 IFAF Women’s World Championship, Leah Hinkle

The first IFAF Women's World Championship featured Austria, Finland, Sweden, Germany, and Canada, who battled the United States in the gold medal game.

2013 IFAF Women’s World Championship

The 2013 IFAF Women's World Championship was held in Helsinki, Finland and featured Spain as a new participant in the six nation lineup.

2015, DC Divas, National Champions

The DC Divas approach two decades of success and are the only women's football team to be honoured by a sitting president for their championship win.

2015, Team Great Britain,

IFAF Women’s European Championship

Team GB established in 2013, has gone from strength to strength since inception, from earning a silver medal at its first major championships, the European Championship in Granada, Spain in 2015 to finishing 4th in the World in 2017 in Canada.

2019, Team Finland, IFAF European Championships

The Finnish Women's National team, established in 2008, has won the European Championship in both 2015 and 2019 and has participated to all of the Women's World Championships by winning bronze in 2010 and 2013. Photo by Linda Mustakari

2020 Helsinki Wolverines, Four Time National Champions

The Women's Maple League, played in Finland, is the highest level series in Europe. The League has been dominated by Helsinki Wolverines Ladies for the last four years.
